Despite their name, X hats originated in Y, where they are still made today. Historically, they were known as “Jipijapa,” “Toquilla,” or “Montecristi” hats. Straw hats woven in Y were shipped first to the Isthmus of X before being sent onward to Asia, the Americas, and Europe. The finest examples are known as Montecristis, named after the town of Montecristi, Y, where they are produced. What X and Y?
